Whats I"m Up To

1.21.2003

Was checking out my daily webcomics, and Mac Hall had a really interesting link in their posting area (the comic was quite exceptional as well) i want to link there myself 3D-Anime, in fact I added it to my Retreat(Links) area.

This 3D Artist has created an Anime styled character entirely out of 3D graphics, and it looks like he used an advanced form of cell-shading (graphics like in Jet Set Radio, or Sly Cooper) on the model and it looks as if it was hand drawn animation, I was pretty impressed, I pride myself on being able to notice things like that, not because I am full of myself but simply because...I can. But even though I knew it was computer generated, I was still in disbelief over it.
I got to thinking that it seems that this is a big direction for computer graphics, it seems many graphics companies who do wholly 3D entertainment are going in this direction. I mean Mainframe Entertainment who has done fine work in the past with Beast Wars and Reboot, have been trying to go in this direction for a while, I have not yet seen much of their attempts in motion yet. They have 3 series s far as I know in the works which plan to use a simlar style, the new Spider-Man series for MTV, a show based on the comicbook GateCrasher, and Fairy Godmther based on some kids books. Also we have Square coming out with Unlimited SaGa, the next in the SaGa series, they are have a technique they call scetch-motion, to make 3D-Animation look like paintings, which looks amazing, and they have succeded in that any still shot you'd sware was hand drawn.

But yes imagine if this got mainstream, and major Animation companies switched to it, after the initial adjustment episodes would take incedbly shorter times to produce. Things like the Simpsons could be done in a few weeks, as oppsed to a few months. Or Anime series, could be done obscenely fast, since that is what this artist intends it for. It could really change the industry. Or Game companies, during the next generation of Hardware deveopment, animation and graphics such as this could be done real-time, imagine a game that looked exactly like a hand drawn Anime show, many games try to go for that style but few do it well enough to note. Or a game based on an anime show, that looked exactly as the source material.

I saw this on Monday, and it just really caught my attention, and got me a little hyper, plus its jut really cool to look at. While I hope hand-drawn stuff never fades away, its still neat to think about some series trying it. Well thats all I got for now, till next time I remain
